If you’ve bumped up your Cherokee with bigger tires or heavier loads, the stock ring & pinion gears probably aren’t keeping up. Upgrading them helps the power from your transfer case and driveshaft get to the wheels in a way that’s smoother, stronger, and better for trail work, rather than grinding gears or heating things up.

Popular upgrades include matched ring & pinion sets for the Dana 30, Dana 35, and Chrysler 8.25 axles—the kind that are heat treated, forged, and built to fit your XJ without guesswork. Many folks also get the master install kits so you’ve got bearings, seals, and shims all in one go. When lockers are added, or when you're pushing torque, having good gear mesh and solid setup matters a lot.

Installing ring & pinion isn’t trivial—you’ll want proper setup with preload, correct backlash, and a good break-in. Once it’s dialed, you’ll feel better acceleration with large tires, less strain on the drivetrain, quieter operation, and generally less chance of damage under demanding off-road or trail use.
